Job Description

Earthjustice is the premier nonprofit environmental law organization. We take on the biggest, most precedent-setting cases across the country. We wield the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people’s health; to preserve magnificent places and wildlife; to advance clean energy; and to combat climate change. We partner with thousands of groups, supporters, individuals, and communities to engage in the critical environmental issues of our time and bring about positive change. We are guided by a passionate, ambitious vision for the future for people and our planet: until justice stands for all, we will never rest. We are here because the earth needs a good lawyer.

Founded in 1971, Earthjustice has a distinguished track record of achieving significant, lasting environmental protections. We achieve this by hiring people who share a passion for justice and a healthy environment. Our headquarters are in San Francisco with offices in Anchorage, Juneau, Los Angeles, Tallahassee, Miami, Honolulu, New York, Philadelphia, Denver, Seattle, Bozeman, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

In addition to a talented cadre of environmental lawyers and legislative advocates, Earthjustice has an amazing communications department that works in partnership with every other department at the organization. The team is looking for a Regional Communications Strategist dedicated to supporting our Rockies and Northern Rockies legal and policy teams. The Regional Communications Strategist works closely with our Rockies and Northern Rockies Managing Attorneys and develops and implements strategic communications —including dynamic storytelling, media, and public outreach—to support priority litigation and legislative advocacy in our docket and to help build Earthjustice’s profile.

The Strategist also coordinates with National Communications Strategists and other Regional Communications Strategists on priority environmental issues at Earthjustice, adopting consistent framing within the lens of our work.

This role can be located in Denver, CO, preferred, or New York, NY, Washington, D.C. or remote on the east coast.

About the Northern Rockies Regional office
The Northern Rockies region boasts some of our nation’s last great wild places. Its magnificent landscapes provide opportunities for both recreation and solitude; its resources have provided sustenance to human communities for thousands of years. Its intact, healthy ecosystems—the Greater Yellowstone, Crown of the Continent, and Salmon-Selway — are key refuges for wildlife. But they are also under increasing stress from habitat fragmentation, destructive development, and rapid global climate change.

Responding to these challenges is a hallmark of Earthjustice. We take on cases that focus on protecting large, intact ecosystems, and seek to build ecosystem resilience by reducing pressures caused by oil and gas development, logging, road building, and off-road vehicle traffic. We are committed to ensuring that our nation’s irreplaceable wild places and wildlife are preserved for future generations.

About the Rocky Mountain Regional Office
More national parks and monuments are concentrated in the Rocky Mountains and the desert southwest than in any other part of the United States. Among its majestic landscapes are snow-capped peaks and lush forests, fantastically sculpted red rock canyons, and the austere beauty of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts.

The Rocky Mountain office, based in Denver, protects the region’s public lands and unique wildlife, challenges reckless oil and gas development and off-road vehicle use, and safeguards precious water resources. The office represents communities experiencing environmental injustice, including urban communities and tribes.

The Regional Communications Strategist will be engaged in the full range of communications strategies and tactics – such as Communications plans, earned media placements, drafting press and background materials, pitching reporters and editorial boards, finding new opportunities for litigators, honing our social media voice on priority issues, and contributing content to our website, blog and quarterly magazine and cultivating the partnerships we need to support program communications goals. Framing our issues and developing Earthjustice’s messaging in our fights will be pivotal in this work. She/he will potentially work in coordination with coalitions and may work to help strengthen and develop them.

Biodiversity Defense Program
The Earth is facing a global biodiversity crisis. We’ve entered an era of mass extinction, the sixth our planet has experienced but the first caused by humans, in which roughly a million of the Earth’s estimated eight million species are threatened with extinction. As many as half of the number of animal individuals that once shared the world with us are already gone. This hollowing out of animal populations has serious implications for the ecosystem services on which all life depends.

The Biodiversity Defense Program fights to reshape our relationship to lands, water, and wildlife everywhere by confronting the major drivers of the decline in nature, including habitat destruction and over-exploitation of wildlife. There has been no greater or more successful defender of the Endangered Species Act itself than Earthjustice. Species such as the spotted owl and the grizzly bear have viable chances for the future thanks in part to our work. Crucial wildlife habitats such as the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the Tongass National Forest are as healthy as they are due in part to our sustained defense of their integrity.
