The Public Policy team supports many facets of GM's automotive business. The team is led by four departments which include External Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, International & Strategic Integration & Analysis. All departments interact internally with business units and externally with state & federal policy makers. Through positive partnerships, our team collaborates closely with regulators, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other automotive companies to define policies that collectively support our operations, customers, and communities.


Your primary responsibility will be to provide analytical support for the Western Region State and Local team. Typically, this involves pursuing independent projects while also working closely with one or more team members to support ongoing workload. During the summer, we expect the intern to be prepared to quickly gather and evaluate information related to their project(s), conduct independent research, and perform quantitative analysis. You will work under the direct supervision of an experienced manager on the State and Local team, but encouraged to be a self-starter, work well independently, and demonstrate the skills and knowledge gained as part of your studies. At the end of the summer, you will present on your project(s) and findings to senior Public Policy staff.


Examples of future projects and work undertaken by previous interns include:

  • Developing and implementing policy research and analysis strategies.
  • Overseeing and participating in the development of reports, documents, briefings and surveys.
  • Monitor and report on committees of interest
  • Research and help prepare PAC request
  • Monitor and track legislation in various states and report on potential business impacts

Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in General Public Policy, Political Science, Public Relations, or related field of study
  • Must be graduating between December 2023 and August 2025
  • Demonstrates leadership in field of study, extra-curricular activities or service organizations
  • Able to work full-time - 40 hours per week during the summer months
  • Experience in spreadsheet-based analysis, brief written summaries, and presentations

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience

This role offers the following Work Appropriately strategies:

  • Remote: This position does not require employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work off-site on a permanent basis.

The monthly base compensation for this role is between $3,800-$5,200. Base compensation will be based on your level of degree.


GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to each student selected for the 2023 Student Program.
