Public Policy Manager

Myrtle Beach, SC / Full-Time

Introduction: The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber is a non-profit membership organization established in 1938 to promote, protect and improve the business community.

Partnership Grand Strand is a 501c 3 Foundation of the Chamber. It is a catalytic economic growth initiative to accelerate the economic prosperity and enhance the quality of life for all businesses and residents across Horry and Georgetown counties.

This position is responsible for interacting with local, state, and federal legislative bodies and government agencies to support our efforts to secure funding for transportation, infrastructure and placemaking efforts.

What You’ll Do:

  • Report to the Director of the Foundation with a dotted line to the VP of Public Policy at the Chamber; assist with strategic plans for securing funding for key projects in the Grand Strand.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with members of local, state, and federal delegations.
  • Assist with grant writing efforts to secure funding for major projects for our cities and counties.
  • Increase communications and advocacy efforts to ensure I-73 and other regional transportation projects are top funding priorities.
  • Help create high profile educational events to raise awareness of the benefits of funding top priority regional transportation projects.
  • Update and create new economic impact studies for the region’s priority transportation projects.
  • Help launch media marketing campaigns to proactively inform and increase local public support for upcoming RIDE programs, I-73, US 501 improvements, the Southern Evacuation Lifeline (SEL) and other transportation projects.
  • Create a speakers’ bureau to educate groups on the importance of transportation investments.
  • Recruit grassroots volunteers to be called to action when needed.
  • Help manage multi-city, multi-chamber and multi-county coalitions and alliances for future transportation projects that cross city and county lines.
  • Collaborate on strategy with Myrtle Beach Downtown Alliance to encourage the redevelopment of underperforming and vacant properties in downtown Myrtle Beach.
  • Monitor and attend relevant local, state and federal government meetings and hearings where transportation, infrastructure and placemaking topics may be germane.
  • Support efforts to incentivize more workforce housing for the Grand Strand in cooperation with the Workforce Talent Manager.

What You’ll Need:

  • Two-three years of experience in public policy at the local or state level preferred.
  • Knowledge of advocacy, public policy and transportation and infrastructure topics preferred.
  • General knowledge of the regulations of federal, state, and local funding programs.
  • Must be able to exercise independent judgment and make decisions necessary to achieve success in assigned areas.
  • Must have strong planning and project management skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, high energy, and organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Must have excellent communications skills, including strong writing and verbal skills.
  • Must be proficient in public presentations.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience and/or willingness to learn grant writing preferred.
  • Grand Strand residency preferred.
