Manager, Communications and Media Relations


The Manager, Communications and Media Relations is responsible for executing proactive public relations, media relations and social media programs and initiatives in support of Covanta’s business objectives. The role is tasked with increasing Covanta’s visibility among target audiences: clients, prospective clients, community leaders, policy makers and employees. This mid-level role reports to the Corporate Communications Director.


 


Media Management


  • Establish and nurture professional relationships with key industry stakeholders, including reporters, editors and other influencers.
  • Draft press releases, editorials, media pitches, holding statements and talking points that publicize and support Covanta’s business objectives.
  • Act as a media spokesperson on behalf of Covanta when appropriate.
  • Lead media training, ensuring senior executives are regularly trained and are well prepared for media interviews.
  • Plan and participate in facility tours and special events.
  • Oversee media monitoring and quarterly reporting to inform company leadership, acquire competitor intelligence and industry knowledge and track results of proactive campaigns.


 


Channel Management and Content Creation


  • Lead the ongoing development and strategy for Covanta “owned” digital and social media channels to increase social engagement, followers, and overall effectiveness.
  • Facilitate the timely development of compelling new content to be leveraged in multiple areas both internally and externally. This may include by-lined articles, surveys, reports, infographics, industry awards and recognitions.




Requirements


Education: BS or BA required (Communications, Journalism, Business or related field). Advanced degree preferred, but not required.

Professional: 5-7 years of relevant communications and public relations experience required.

Experience working with cross-functional teams in developing and executing communications strategies, programs and tactics that consistently and effectively deliver messages across disciplines.

Outstanding written and verbal communications, interpersonal savvy, business acumen, strong organizational and planning skills and drive for results.

Expert knowledge of top and emerging social media platforms with experience driving engagement using data and analytics. Experience managing public relations/advertising vendors.

Ability to multi-task and problem-solve in a fast-paced, changing environment, delivering high-quality work and exceeding objectives.

A record of past promotion and/or professional growth required. Working knowledge of the waste industry helpful but not required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs is necessary; experience with video editing and Adobe programs such as Photoshop and InDesign a plus.
