Overview:

Reporting to the associate dean for public affairs and communications, and working closely with the dean of the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) and Princeton's Office of Government Affairs, the Director of the SPIA in Washington, D.C., Initiative will be responsible for increasing the School's identity in the nation's capital and raising our global profile as a leading school of public policy and international affairs.


The Director will promote collaborative and programmatic pedagogical opportunities in D.C. for students and faculty experts; facilitate gatherings, conferences, and other events with subject matter experts, policymakers, academic and policy leaders for SPIA audiences; leverage direct opportunities to share with and learn from policy expertise across the Capitol Hill and think tank communities; promote the research initiatives and achievements of SPIA faculty, research scholars, centers and programs, and students among key Washington constituents; provide a hub for SPIA alumni resident in, or visiting, the D.C. area; serve as a host for key administrative and programmatic activities of SPIA, including graduate admissions, the Scholars in the Nation's Service Initiative (SINSI), policy clinics, and other initiatives.


This position is based in Washington D.C., but the incumbent is expected to travel to Princeton for meetings, when necessary.

Responsibilities:


  • The director promotes the research initiatives and achievements of SPIA faculty, centers and programs, research scholars, and students among key Washington constituents. The director must engage directly with SPIA faculty to acutely understand and best amplify their research (and that of their centers, programs, research staff and students) and its implications for a broad audience of elected officials, political appointees, government staffers, think-tank representatives, and related individuals and organizations. Sponsor and organize events in the D.C. area related to scholarly research and achievements, including research briefings, book launches, keynote talks, and conferences.

  • Promotes collaborative and programmatic pedagogical opportunities in D.C. for students and faculty experts; facilitates gatherings of subject matter experts, policymakers, academic and policy leaders for SPIA audiences; leverages direct opportunities to share with and learn from policy expertise across the Capitol Hill and think tank communities. Organizes and executes the annual SPIA D.C. Speakers Series, including oversight of the planning committee, identification of speakers, coordination of logistics, etc.

  • Serves as a "home base" coordinator for SPIA’s federal policy engagement, serving both a practical need for physical space to gather and enhance student experiences, and as a symbol for the School’s commitment to providing its services to advancing policy on the federal level. Actively fosters a dynamic hub and "networking space" for SPIA alumni resident in, or visiting, the D.C. area. Coordinates alumni-related activities with SPIA academic administration office. Serves as a host for and facilitates key administrative and programmatic activities of SPIA, including graduate admissions, the Scholars in the Nation's Service Initiative (SINSI), policy clinics, and other initiatives.

  • Works closely with the University's Office of Government Affairs office on outreach to and engagement with policy communities in Washington, D.C. Via the SPIA office of Communications and Public Affairs, the assistant director collaborates/partners with the University’s central Office of Communications on elevating SPIA and institutional priorities, engaging new and diverse media and stakeholders, and convening voices from within and outside the school on critical topics.

  • Manages the Venue Manager who will handle the master calendar of events and office suite use; ensures that spaces are properly reserved, prepared, staffed, cleaned, etc.; in conjunction with SPIA facilities administrator, ensure that space, equipment, technology, and furnishings are properly maintained and updated. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the SPIA Dean and Associate Dean.

Qualifications:


The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of successful professional experience working on public policy and international affairs issues in both academic and non-academic settings and communicating with a broad set of government, think-tank, and academic audiences. Acute familiarity with the D.C. community and environs.


Must be a strategic thinker who can support a visionary leader, collaborate with a variety of stakeholders to meet deadlines, and clearly convey the story of a prominent academic institution.


Should have experience in communications, media relations, and event planning; working knowledge of Internet research tools, web-based communications, and other technologies.


Experience working and interacting with senior figures in government, think-tanks, and academia as well as the private sector.


Preferred Qualifications:


A knowledge of, and personal interest in, public policy and international affairs informed through direct work experience is critical. Demonstrated capacity to quickly comprehend and translate scholarly research for diverse audiences; ability to take initiative, exercise independent judgment, demonstrate tact and discretion, and work effectively with a wide range of constituents working toward the School’s mission is essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively with professionals from across the University as well as government, think-tanks, not-for-profits.


Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Minimum qualifications include a B.A. or B.S. An advanced degree is strongly preferred (MPA, MPP, MBA, JD, PhD).
