The Role: The position of Legislative Assistant in the office of Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez is currently open. We welcome you to apply.

Essential Job Function: The Legislative Assistant will staff the Congresswoman on the Financial Services Committee and cover other policy areas as needed.

Legislative Assistant Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

preparing all policy memos, talking points, remarks, and question lines for all Financial Services Committee hearings and briefings;

scoping new legislative action and developing legislative strategies that advance economic justice, housing, climate finance, foreign policy and other policy areas as needed;

issues that fall under Financial Services Committee include: capital markets, insurance, banking, monetary policy;

mapping out areas for collaboration and collective legislative action with internal and external partners;

managing relationships with the committee;

advising the Congresswoman and the Legislative Director in developing and advancing committee activities and legislative strategies;

working closely with the Legislative Director and Chief of Staff to effectively communicate and advance key legislative priorities;

in partnership with the Communications team, drafting remarks and talking points;

monitoring legislative activity (committee, floor, and Senate) and providing vote recommendations to the Legislative Director and Congresswoman on assigned issues;

maintaining strong ties with constituent groups, grassroots organizers, frontline communities, academics, and other stakeholders;

and accepting performance-based constructive criticism and guidance.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to,

scoping new legislative action that advances a job creation, justice, and decarbonization legislative agenda in a governing moment;

maintaining relationships with constituent groups and other stakeholders;

writing remarks, talking points, and correspondences and letters to constituents;

supporting the district and communications team;

and staffing the Congresswoman at meetings, hearings, and events.

You should have a good understanding of the referenced policy areas and be a strategic thinker who is looking to achieve these goals in a governing moment.

You have a set of lived and professional experiences that equip you well to serve the residents of New York’s 14th congressional district and firmly believe that every person has a contribution to make to our legislative agenda.

Additionally, you should be able to work well and calm under pressure; possess strong oral and written communication skills; and be available to work longer hours in collaboration with multiple departments.

If you have previous legislative Hill or committee experience, and knowledge of legislative processes, we encourage you to apply. If you do possess these experiences and knowledge, please specify how you have rooted your work in advocacy and among the grassroots.

Location and Work Environment: The role is based in Washington, D.C. COVID 19 precautions and remote work expected for the immediate time frame. Work is mainly performed in a small office environment.

Compensation: $52,000. Our office also provides a competitive benefits package that includes health insurance, dental, federal student loan payment (terms apply), and paid family leave.
