General Description

The Marketing Specialist works within the Office of the Governor (OOG), Economic Development and Tourism (EDT) Division and reports to the Director of Tourism. Performs complex (journey-level) marketing and administrative work required for coordinating activities in international travel industry sales, public relations and marketing areas. Promotes Texas as a premier travel destination in international markets to travel trade professionals, travel media, and consumers. Work involves organizing travel trade missions, travel trade shows, familiarization tours, media tours, educational seminars, and cooperative projects with tour operators, airlines in target markets and with Texas tourism partners. Serves as a source person for questions and problems from tourism staff, contractors and tourism partners. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Duties

  • Plans, coordinates and implements special events. These may include but not limited to trade show exhibitions, trade missions, educational seminars, speeches, interviews, consumer and trade promotions and/or any other special and related promotion that increases the awareness of Texas as a premier travel destination in the target markets.
  • Routinely reads, edits, interprets and composes reports and special publications, including collateral and advertorial copy.
  • Responsible for oversight and direction of activities of contractors.
  • Coordination and solicitation of Texas partners’ participation in advertising, marketing and public relations activities in target markets.
  • Analyzes international travel market studies to decide thrust of the marketing, media and travel trade programs.
  • Coordinates with contractors on international media and marketing activities, i.e., interviews, seminars, presentations, editorial, press releases, media kits, and general dissemination of state tourism data, promotional material and marketing activities.
  • Coordinates shipments and distribution of promotional and collateral materials to international markets.
  • Assists with tracking results of marketing, travel trade and media relations efforts.
  • Responsible for lead fulfillment and distribution to state tourism partners.
  • Maintains regular work schedule.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications or communications-related field;
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in planning, development and execution of international travel industry marketing, travel trade promotions and media relations; and
  • Fluency in Spanish language.

Note: Experience and education may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to communicate in Portuguese.

  • Ability to routinely record information such as draft correspondence, reports, documents, policies, procedures, conduct interviews and record information, or prepare other lengthy documents using handwritten or mechanical means.
  • Ability to identify problems, evaluates alternatives, and implements effective solutions.
  • Ability to develop and evaluate policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships within and outside the agency.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple large projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to travel 50% (i.e., weekly or monthly) under normal conditions for long distances.

Registration, Certification or Licensure

Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements and/or Working Conditions

This classification functions in a standard office environment. Ability to move up to 20 Ibs. Ability to drive and travel as needed. Will need to move about the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, set up conference rooms for meetings, etc. Must be able to communicate and exchange accurate information via phone, computer and in person. Must be able to observe and evaluate data in a variety of formats, including hard copy, electronic and media formats. Must be able to work hours during a legislative session that include holidays and as needed.
