Job Description

Position Description

When you think about elections, you might think about popular candidates, “I voted” stickers, and all sorts of paperwork and deadlines. But behind the scenes are thousands of people in state and local governments who are working hard to make sure accurate election information is published, ballots are counted, and voices are heard.

As CTCL Senior Campaign Manager, your goal is to support local elections offices across the country in advocating for adequate and reliable funding at the federal, state and local levels. You will implement CTCL’s nonpartisan advocacy strategy to support elections officials in administering inclusive and secure elections. You will execute tactics to support a range of key audiences including election officials, elected officials, allied organizations, and other CTCL supporters. Working closely with other members of the department, you will manage persuasion campaigns at all levels of government, and support the skills-development of key audiences to build power.

You’ll report to the Advocacy Director and work in collaboration with other members of the CTCL team. This is a new position in a new department, so there’s room for you to help shape what the role looks like.

Responsibilities

  • Coalition Management and Relationship Building
  • Work with national and state partners to grow a diverse, cross-partisan coalition of local and state election officials, member-organizations, issue advocacy groups, and government relations professionals to advocate in Washington DC.
  • Utilize organizing skills to continue to broaden our umbrella by regularly holding 1:1s with potential partners and developing lasting strategic relationships.
  • Regularly travel to elections officials convenings and serve as an ambassador to CTCL’s programs. Continually identify opportunities to level up impact and service to elections officials.
  • Strategic Initiative
  • Work with the advocacy team & allies to adapt plans, generate new tactics, and regularly evolve campaigns to respond to ever-changing landscapes.
  • Prioritize victory and values, and stay flexible.
  • Regularly deliver results on high-stakes advocacy campaigns.
  • Consultant Management
  • Project manage a team of consultants by providing strategic guidance, developing needed advocacy assets, and tracking deliverables to deliver success on campaigns.
  • Regularly hold efficient check-ins that allow for exchanging of intel and dynamic responses to evolving opportunities and threats.
  • Programmatic Writing
  • Support the CTCL Advocacy department in translating policy outlines into plain-language summaries for the general public, draft programmatic overviews for funder and partner audiences, and develop training materials for allies.
  • Develop slide decks, draft Op-Eds and Letters to the Editor, and draft social media posts to share with partners as needed.
  • Commitment to professional growth
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and desire to grow within the organization, to seize leadership opportunities, and to absorb new learnings and skills.
  • Commitment to priority audiences
  • Ensure CTCL programs for election departments prioritize voters with limited access to the election system. This includes voters who are newly eligible, have limited English proficiency, live with disabilities, or are from communities that are impacted by the digital divide or historical disenfranchisement due to race.

Desired Qualifications

A successful candidate for the Senior Campaign Manager position will be an effective organizer and campaigner with a strong writing and relationship management foundation. In addition, while no candidate will possess every quality, the successful candidate will possess many of the following qualifications and personal attributes:

  • Campaign Skills
  • You are enthusiastic about making elections more secure and inclusive. You believe in democracy and care about voting.
  • You are hungry for victory. You don’t just focus on inputs, but instead work relentlessly to deliver results because you want your work to make a difference.
  • You have demonstrated success in legislative advocacy at some level of government, and have gone through a full advocacy campaign cycle. You could confidently lead a planning process, write a campaign plan independently, manage a project budget, lead a volunteer team, and effectively facilitate a debrief.
  • Management Skills
  • You build diverse tables. You seek out allies who can work with us on discrete issue campaigns, knowing that their perspectives may differ on other things. You thrive in fostering strategic relationships among others and building a team dynamic.
  • You value the people, not just the work, and approach work with kindness, patience, and an encouraging attitude. You see the potential in others and help cultivate them into their best selves. You are an organizer who enjoys delegating.
  • You have skills and experiences that help you understand people who face barriers accessing public services. For instance, you may be multilingual with experience working with native speakers of a language other than English.
  • Professional Skills
  • You are an efficient and precise writer, who is comfortable drafting 5-7 pages of plain-language writing multiple days per week.
  • You are a detail-oriented task-tracker who can manage a personal to-do list and is adamant about accomplishing goals. You are incredibly responsive and enjoy connecting via various digital channels.
  • You are comfortable in a virtual professional setting. You can manage your workload in a fully remote setting and foster a sense of community in the digital space. You are accountable and self-motivated without an office environment.
  • You know that feedback loops can help you create the best work. You create opportunities to get input from colleagues and partners.

Growth

CTCL uses organizational systems to keep staff connected and accountable to each other and the work. These systems include goal-setting, evaluations, and staff retreats every 6 months, as well as staff meetings and 1:1 calls each week. While we maintain structures, it’s also important that CTCL be adaptive to respond to the changing needs of the world around us. This might look like setting goals, evaluating our tactics, and deciding to shift priorities over time. This means the people who work with CTCL are thoughtful in both making plans and also adjusting them based on emerging information.

We stay curious and persistent as the landscape of U.S. election administration shifts. To adapt to new challenges and invest in the excellence of our team, all positions at CTCL provide opportunities for increased responsibility. We focus on professional growth opportunities related to the scope and complexity of your work, specialized knowledge, independence, and leadership.
