Director, Refugee Advocacy Lab and Senior Advisor for Strategic Outreach

 

The Refugee Advocacy Lab (“The Lab”) is a multi-stakeholder initiative hosted at Refugees International (RI) and co-founded by RI, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), and Refugee Congress. The Lab’s mission is to expand support and leadership for U.S. refugee protection. It does so by developing strategic communications tools, advancing national- and state-level policies, and building cross-cutting partnerships among refugee advocates, communities, business leaders, and other groups.

The Lab seeks a director to lead its activities and coordinate its partnerships. Working under the strategic guidance of the founding partners of The Lab, the Director will manage a team of staff who work for both The Lab and its partners. The Director of The Lab will also serve as a Senior Advisor for Strategic Outreach at Refugees International. The Senior Advisor will advise the RI President and management team on public engagement and advocacy initiatives to improve protection of displaced people—both in the United States and around the world.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Director, Advocacy Lab (80%)

  • Work with Lab partners to design and implement The Lab’s strategy, and identify and execute activities needed to achieve The Lab’s goals;
  • Lead the design and implementation of campaigns to expand support for refugees and other initiatives to advance the Lab’s objectives;
  • Manage and coordinate Lab staff and consultants in a positive-sum, collaborative spirit;
  • Fundraise for Lab activities;
  • Leverage the assets and capacities of Lab partners for mutual benefit and toward shared objectives;
  • Build, expand, and deepen relationships with stakeholders and partners, including through regular convenings and learning sessions;
  • Create and sustain processes and systems to oversee, track, and evaluate impact, performance, and operations; and
  • Ensure that Lab activities and operations integrate smoothly with host systems at Refugees International, including identifying efficiencies and opportunities for streamlining.


Senior Advisor for Strategic Outreach, Refugees International (20%)

  • Increase RI’s impact by identifying and communicating theories of change, mapping and managing stakeholders, building partnerships, and conducting effective outreach and advocacy;
  • Design advocacy campaigns and social media and other engagement tools to educate, communicate with, and mobilize target audiences to achieve strategic objectives;
  • Engage new partners and refugee champions.

 

EXPERIENCES and COMPETENCIES of a Successful Candidate

  • At least 10 years of progressive responsibility and leadership in the fields of communications, campaigns, movement/coalition building, advocacy, and/or outreach, especially in the refugee protection or immigration field;
  • Experience presenting and contributing publicly to the discourse on issues advancing the common good;
  • Proven record as an inclusive, passionate, results-oriented leader and manager;
  • Experience in grant writing and fundraising;
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within and outside the organization;
  • Authorization to work in the United States; and
  • Experience with refugee and forced displacement issues, including lived experience, preferred but not required.

ABOUT REFUGEES INTERNATIONAL

Refugees International (RI) advocates for assistance and protection for refugees and displaced persons, and for solutions to refugee and humanitarian crises. The team of advocates travel to some of the world’s most severe displacement crises to investigate first-hand the challenges displaced people face, create policy solutions, and demand action.  

 

ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: between $100,000 and $130,000 depending on background and experience.

This is a one-year term appointment, with the possibility of renewal. The position coordinates with the RI communications/campaigns and government relations teams.
