Job Description


The Organizer will work closely with the State Director and the entire Public Policy team to effectively establish and run a grassroots organizing program. Our mission is to mobilize individuals in support of reproductive freedom and full access to reproductive health services. The Organizer will work with the State Director to formalize and streamline statewide grassroots organizing activities while building capacity and infrastructure. The Organizer will conduct ongoing outreach activities, particularly around volunteer activities and issue-based campaigns. The Organizer will coordinate and manage volunteers and interns to implement our grassroots organizing activities, with particular emphasis on campus organizing. 

    

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Grassroots Organizing Develop an organizing plan, including goals and metrics in conjunction with State Director for recruiting and maintaining activists, working with volunteers, volunteer leaders, and interns Implement the organizing plan with ongoing phone banking, texting, and canvassing activities Identify and implement tabling, recruiting, and other visibility opportunities Identify and cultivate “key contacts” in targeted communities Mobilize activists for special purposes, including letter writing campaigns, phone banking, canvassing, days of action, visibility events, legislative lobbying, house parties, etc.

Represents PPSE in the Community Represent PPSE in coalitions, supporting coalition work and partners when appropriate Cultivate relationships with community groups and activists


External Communication Create advocacy alerts for specific activist activities and events Create and maintain a story tellers list that can be engaged as needed Prepare reports for State Director based on organizing work metrics


Database Management Oversee maintenance of data in activist database Monitor list growth; develop and achieve list growth goals Drive and track key grant deliverables Oversee peer-to-peer texting and outreach campaigns, including data coordination and script drafting


Volunteer Management Recruit and manage volunteers, volunteer leaders, and interns Create strategic work plans, organize their training, provide opportunities for growth up the ladder of engagement, and supervise their work


Administrative Duties Supply information for grant reports, board reports, and strategic plan updates Participate in annual planning process Track time spent and expenses as required Coordinate training for volunteers and interns Other duties as required


QUALIFICATIONS

Education Bachelor level degree (preferred); Experience as an organizer (preferred)


Experience Knowledgeable about issues of sexuality education, reproductive health, and social justice Experience preferred in political campaigns or community organizing, either volunteer or paid Familiarity with the legislative process preferred Familiarity with and commitment to Planned Parenthood mission


Skills Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and database management Experience with VAN preferred Exceptional interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, including writing skills Ability to earn the confidence of a wide range of internal and external constituents Ability to demonstrate public speaking and training skills preferred Ability to gracefully manage multiple projects and to meet multiple deadlines Ability to work independently and as part of a team


Physical Demands Long hours at the computer are necessary at times Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel within the community for programs Flexibility in work hours. Many evenings during campaign and legislative season and weekend hours during busy seasons are necessary


Languages Spoken English required, Spanish proficiency encouraged
