The National Marine Manufacturers Association is seeking a Southeastern Policy and Engagement Manager to join its Government Relations department. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) is the leading trade association for the U.S. and Canadian recreational boating industry (nmma.org), the primary advocate for the boating business community and boating consumer, and the leading producer of consumer boat shows in the United States. NMMA represents 85% of the U.S. and Canadian recreational marine manufacturing market including companies that make boats, marine engines and accessories. Company size and location:

NMMA has an office in Washington, D.C., and the largest office is in Chicago, Illinois. Currently, the team is working remotely and will likely continue to be remote through the summer of 2021. In addition to Washington, D.C. and Chicago, members of NMMA’s team are based in regions where it produces its consumer boat shows including Boston, Louisville, Miami, Minneapolis, and New York. When it is safe to return to the office, NMMA will offer a flexible work environment, including remote work. The association currently employs 65 people:


Position Description:

This position supports NMMA’s advocacy and grassroots activities in the southeastern geographical region, including AL, FL, GA, KS, KY, LA, MS, MO, NC, OH, OK, SC, TN, VA, WV. The state policy team is comprised of a total of four people. This position is entirely remote and must reside in one of the states listed.


This role monitors and responds to state legislative and regulatory activity impacting the boating industry, coordinates with industry members for grassroots and PAC engagement, and assists the policy team in mobilizing assets in key Congressional districts on federal agency and congressional issues.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build and be a great partner throughout the region with governors, state legislators, staff and related agencies to promote policy priorities of boating industry.
  • Analyze, monitor and respond to state legislative and regulatory matters impacting boating.
  • Work collaboratively with the state and federal government relations team to advance proactive and reactive agenda. Directly lead contract lobbyists that may be hired in the SE region
  • Mobilize political assets in key districts to arrange tours of the manufacturing facilities of NMMA members by members of Congress and state legislators, engage in district meetings, and political fundraisers.
  • Coordinate with communications and marketing staff in the development and execution of grassroots strategy.
  • Draft testimony, letters, legislative analyses and advocacy materials for distribution to membership.
  • Represent recreational boating interests at state capitols, conferences, meetings and coalitions.


Position Requirements:

  • Knowledge and interest in public policy and grassroots strategies.
  • Previous policy experience with grassroots, campaign and/or as a field representative for elected officials preferred.
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills.
  • Consistent track record of working in coalitions
  • Self-starter, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and work in a remote but fast-pace environment.
  • Familiarity with boating and outdoor recreation
  • Ability to travel throughout southeast region, at times on short notice.
  • Prefer working from a home office


Credentials/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Three to five years relevant campaign, association or political experience
