Job Summary:

Email is among the most effective means GMF has for building and engaging our audiences, serving as a conduit to showcase our research and analysis, events, and initiatives with policy, leadership, and civil society communities in the United States, Europe, and beyond. The email marketing specialist will serve as GMF’s main strategist in optimizing email as a channel to reach and grow these audiences. The email marketing specialist will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to grow GMF’s email community and reach greater target audiences for specific outreach campaigns, foregrounding GMF’s fiftieth anniversary in 2022. This will entail spearheading the creation and management of institutional email products, including newsletters, community updates, and communications around major events. The specialist will also take the lead in coordination and quality control for email communications from across GMF’s programs, as well as monitoring and reporting on the performance of GMF’s email products. The specialist will help advance a culture of strategic communications and deliberate audience stewardship among GMF programs and offices.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (in order of importance):

Develop and implement email strategy for GMF to drive growth of GMF’s audience and increase audience engagement with GMF email products

Craft email products to highlight core GMF products and activities

Writing and sourcing content for newsletters and other emails

Develop targeted lists for email outreach around events, research products, and other GMF offerings based on subject matter affinity

Ensuring emails and other digital products meet GMF standards for quality and branding

Analyzing email campaigns’ performance and iterating strategy based on findings

Training and guiding program staff in best practices for email communications

Updating email templates and other features as appropriate

Contribute to other communications activities, including digital content development and analysis, as needed

Internal/External Contacts:

Collaborate with GMF staff in Communications, Editorial, and Strategic Convening teams, as well as all offices and programs

External coordination with partners, including funders, co-hosts, and other stakeholders on particular initiatives as needed.

Autonomy and Responsibility:

Reports to Communications Director in Washington DC

Has autonomy to communicate with GMF staff and fellows at all levels and authority to maintain brand standards for email communications.

Knowledge and Skills Needed:

Knowledge of American media landscape and established network amongst Washington-based foreign policy media; knowledge of European media a plus.

Ability to manage communications and workflow across time zones.

Excellent academic and journalistic writing skills.

Native-speaker level written and spoken English.

Interest in international relations, particularly American and European foreign policy.

Experience with podcasting and digital media a plus.

Education:

B.A. degree in English, journalism, international relations, marketing, or a related field.
