Job Description

Senior Politics Writer

Newsweek

Washington, DC

Newsweek is seeking a Senior Politics Writer to anchor the magazine’s national political coverage. Candidates should have a command of Washington and a deep Rolodex of sources that will take readers inside the biggest issues of the day, from immigration and health care to abortion rights and gun control. Equally important is a demonstrated ability to buck the Beltway echo chamber and offer sharp insight with voice, backed up by strong reporting. We’re not interested in conventional wisdom, faux outrage or politics as sport. We want to direct and influence the national conversation, not merely reflect it. Writing long-form magazine pieces is a key part of this job. This writer will lead our coverage of the Trump administration, the 2018 midterms and the 2020 presidential campaign.

*At least five years experience at a major news organization

*Track record of holding politicians accountable and producing reporting with impact

*Demonstrated ability to find storylines that showcase the human cost of public policy

*Experience writing magazine-style narratives that feature strong characters

*Can juggle quick-hit analysis off the news and short-term enterprise while working on a long-form profile for print

Washington D.C.-based candidates are preferred but strong contenders living elsewhere will be considered.

If you are interested in this role and meet the above requirements, please email your resume and cover letter to m.schilling @newsweek.com and m.mishak @newsweek.com.
