The Cato Institute’s Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives is expanding its DC-based team and seeking to hire a director of financial regulation studies to cover and oversee a broad portfolio of financial regulation issues, including banking and securities regulation. The Cato Institute is a public policy research organization—a think tank—dedicated to the principles of individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace. Its scholars and analysts conduct independent, nonpartisan research on a wide range of policy issues. Cato established the Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives in 2014, responding to a growing need for robust research on and analysis of the expansive role central banks and government regulation of finance play in the economy. The Center is dedicated to revealing the shortcomings of today’s centralized and discretionary monetary and financial regulatory systems and to identifying, studying, and promoting alternatives more conducive to a stable, flourishing, and free society.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing and executing the Center’s strategy on financial regulation issues, in consultation and conjunction with the Center’s Director and Managing Director.
  • Managing and supervising financial regulation scholars, assisting them with developing their policy portfolio in line with the Center’s mission.
  • Overseeing special projects related to the financial regulation portfolio, including the Center’s amicus brief and public comment letter programs.
  • Editing policy work to ensure brand quality and integrity.
  • Assisting with Center development strategies.
  • Producing, soliciting, editing, summarizing, and promoting policy research on financial regulation issues.
  • Providing timely commentary on financial regulation issues, including in the form of Op-Eds, media interviews, and other speaking engagements.
  • Developing a wider audience for the Center’s content, including among policymakers, media outlets, and other scholarly policy organizations.
  • Contributing to the Center’s overall mission by actively participating in Center initiatives and identifying new areas of exploration.


Qualifications:

  • A JD or PhD in economics or finance with at least seven years of experience.
  • A demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and personnel to achieve a strategic mission.
  • A demonstrated understanding of the banking regulatory system and/or securities regulation; particular areas of expertise may include the Dodd-Frank Act, banking capital requirements, deposit insurance, federal securities regulation, capital markets, derivatives, corporate structure and governance, and housing finance.
  • Superior research, writing, and communication skills.
  • A commitment to identifying and promoting alternatives to the existing monetary and financial regulatory systems that are more conducive to a stable, flourishing, and free society.
  • Experience on Capitol Hill, at a financial regulator, such as the Federal Reserve or Securities and Exchange Commission, or in a policy-focused practice at a law firm or institution is preferred.
