Job Title: Political Organizing Apprentice – LIMITED DURATION 11 WEEKS

Chapter: Illinois

Reports To: Deputy Director, Illinois Chapter

Context: Under supervision of the assigned supervisor, helps to build public support to accomplish conservation and political campaign goals by electing candidates who will lead on issues of clean energy, clean water and conservation. Recruits and trains volunteer leaders; assists in carrying out campaign strategies and interacts with volunteers, citizens, political candidates, other organizations, the media and other staff.

Scope & Limitations: This is an apprentice position in the environmental field for an individual who within the last 12 months (from appointment date) has graduated from a four year degree (BA, B.S.) or a graduate level program. The incumbent may only hold this apprenticeship, or any combination of apprenticeships, for up to 1 year (12 months).

Job Activities:

Works with staff and volunteers to devise, recommend, and implement a plan and strategy for a political campaign.

Identifies recruits and organizes volunteers both in Sierra Club and other groups around assigned campaign or program. Seeks opportunities to advance the Sierra Club’s diversity initiatives through new partnerships and engagement strategies where appropriate.

Participates (as part of a team) in planning and carrying out plans or strategies on various environmental projects or campaigns, such as public education, legislative initiatives, political programs, or grassroots organizing.

Assists in providing guidance, training, and information to volunteers, chapters, groups, elected officials and the general public.

Engage with direct contact with voters, and Sierra Club members about political endorsements and policy positions. Engage in community organizing, recruiting volunteers,

and generating publicity for candidates and environmental issues.

Exchanges information, coordinates activities and works with other Club staff, volunteer organizations, Chapters, and groups. Coordinates and measures success of activities with manager to ensure progress towards the campaign's mission and goals.

Works independently on specific assigned projects.

Assists in general office duties to support the office and performs other relates duties as requested by the supervisor.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Education required:

A four year degree or a graduate degree in Environmental Science, Political Science or a related field within the last 12 months.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work well with diverse group, staff, volunteers and the public.

Candidates should be passionate about social justice, clean energy and climate action, and eager to engage in moving people to political action and building the environmental movement.
